History Coca Leaves:

The coca leaf plays a fundamental role in Andean cultural history. Since pre-Hispanic times, in addition to providing stimulus to work and possessing many medicinal properties, it was also a highly valued product in the Andean culture.

In Peru, since time immemorial, coca cultivation has been part of the tradition and customs of the Andean peasantry. Coca is used for chewing, stimulant effects, medicinal applications and religious rituals. It is estimated that these uses and applications date back to around 6,500 years before the Spanish conquest of Peru.

The traditional use of the coca leaf has compromised the multiple dimensions of social events, playing a central role in all collective ceremonies of transcendence: baptisms, marriages, deaths, organization of celebrations, etc. It is precisely the “sacred” character attributed to the plant, which has turned it into an object of reverence and worship, giving it deep meaning. The leaf as a “sacred leaf” not only enriched social solidarity but also facilitated ritual communication with the divinities.
